CU Street Medicine Student Group

Who We Are & Partnership with YHC

CU Street Med was founded in 2020 by medical student Rebecca Henkind and then Nursing Student Kiera Connelly with the goal of increasing homeless health educational opportunities at Anschutz Medical Campus. Since then, CU Street Medicine has been awarded multiple grants, including the Street Medicine Institute’s National Seed Grant in 2021, and the CU President’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Grant in 2022.

CU Street Medicine is a student interest group for anyone interested in learning more about homelessness in our community and what we can do to help from a medical and social perspective. Activities directly related to CU Street Medicine are limited to educational and advocacy opportunities. However, all outreach opportunities are available through our partnership with YHC clinic.

Medical training is not required. Current volunteers include: Community members, licensed medical providers, and students in various programs including MD, RN, PA, NP, DDM, DPT, MPH, PharmD, PhD, undergrad.

Our Goals

  1. Provide healthcare services and improve access to care for people experiencing homelessness (PEH).
  2. Offer volunteer opportunities for any interested party, including but not limited to healthcare professional students, to gain insight and experience on the social determinants of health for PEH.
  3. Build network of trusting relationships with community allies in low-resource communities for PEH.

Current Activities

  • Quarterly educational lecture series, seasonal donation drives, MSA advising
  • Community Efforts: Point-In-Time Survey, Advocacy Day at the Capitol
  • Medical & Non-Medical Outreaches (NMO): Street outreaches are led by city-employed Community Navigators
